Trock On!

I'm home with (maybe) the flu or (maybe) pneumonia or possibly dengue fever. I've had a fever of around 100F for over a week now. Today's the day I finally call the doctor. Not to be confused with The Doctor, which is what this post is really about.

While waiting for my doc's office to open, I've stumbled across a musical genre with which I was previously unfamiliar. It's called Trock. Short for Time Lord Rock. Basically, it's rock and roll about Doctor Who. Don't know who Doctor Who or Time Lords are? You prolly should. I mean, it's been on TV on and off since the early 60's! Turn on PBS or BBC America once in a while, Aina'? Better yet, go DVR a few eps, or check out some CDs from your local library and come back once you're caught up.

The currently biggest Trock band (and coiner of the term)is Chameleon Circuit. (For those who don't know, The Chameleon Circuit is that bit which allows a TARDIS [It stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space... it's a time-travelling space ship thingie - seriously, why are you still reading this? Go! Watch!] to change its exterior appearance to blend in with the local landscape. The Doctor's chameleon circuit is usually broken, so his TARDIS almost always looks like a british police box, circa the 1950s - see at right) . A couple of videos may be appropriate at this point

Here's a vid of Chameleon Circuit's song "An Awful Lot of Running":

and another of their song "Exterminate Regenerate" about TheDoctor's ongoing battle with the Daleks [They're kind of cyborg killing machines on wheels (nice design, that)that go about shouting Exterminate! EXTERMINATE! The regenerate comes about because ... oh hell, just watch the show, why don't you?).

The band TheTimeLords has been doing Dr Who themed tunes for ages, but maybe a bit lacking on the originality?

An entertainment:

Yesterday, I passionately praised the glories of a frigid winter day. As is often the case with furious passion, that which burns fiercely burns out quickly. The long and short? I aint goin out in this shit again. So, TheFishmonger is taking the day off and staying home with the kids. I'm currently trying to figure out how to hook a spaceheater to my sweatpants. I'll let you know if I figure it out. In the meantime, here's a video to help pass your own frigid day (or if you don't live near me, it might be a mild day, or even a toasty day... bastard).

The vid is by fishrockit. It's entitled "Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn't seen it). Enjoy!

Sticky Note EepyBird

Eepybird, they of the famous Diet Coke and Mentos performance, have released a new video based off of those sticky notes that are accordioned for use in dispensers. Very cool. Plus, it has that cute girl from Samurai Girl on the video. Bonus!

Thanks to Viola Zuppa for showing this to me!

Boom de yada

Thanks to xkcd to linking to this, and to Viola for pointing it out to me!

It's aDiscovery channel commercial, but it's so sweet it brings a tear to my eye. I think my favorite part is Stephen Hawking saying Boom De Yada. Except it's more like bum-de-yata. Very low key. excellent.

Have I mentioned...

...how much I love the internet? Just stumbled across this video of one of my all time favorite movie scenes. If I ever get a dog, I'm naming it CK Dexter Haven. Then if, one day, it runs away, I'll get drunk on champagne and go looking for it. "Oh, C.K. Dexter Ha-a-a-a-v-e-e-e-n!

PS: Viola Zuppa has just pointed out that today is Jimmy Stewart's birthday! He'd be 100 today if he weren't already dead. Happy birthday, James!

Flickr video

So flickr has added videos, but with a 90 second limit. They're billing it as photos that move. Interesting choice. I think I like it. There was no way they'd compete with youtube, so this positions them as the repository for videos from digital cameras - and provides the opportunity for a sort of "twitter for videos". The restriction placed on it may just provoke new creativity. I for one am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Christopher Walken Cooks

I find this video of Christopher Walken making roasted chicken and pears to be, well, obsession-inducing. I swear, I just found out about it 15 minutes ago, and I've already watched it three times. Is it his voice? The strangely ordinary look of his kitchen? His fascination with the roasting rack? I just don't know... My favorite moment occurs right before the end:
"They get like little cookies. They're very tasty. I save them."
I get chills.
I think I'm losing my mind.

PS: Rhesusmonkey wonders:
Do you think he just breaks into houses when people are away, then cooks chicken and lets the family cat eat it? Because if that's what he does, it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

quarterlife

I just stumbled across a new web-show last night. It stars the woman who played the aunt on lonelygirl. Turns out her real name is Bitsie Tulloch. Oh my lord. Bitsie Tulloch?! Wow. That should be the name of a german singer from the 20's. But the show is pretty good. 8-12 minutes, twice a week. Basically, it's Friends set in real life.

They meet in a bar instead of a coffee shop, and their lives are a lot messier and more dramatic. There's so much going on already, that I don't even know where to start. There's the pretty blonde waitress whose acting coach crushes her by saying that she doesn't own her sexuality and she shouldn't be an actress; the writer working as an intern assistant editor whose boss steals here idea - so she lets everyone know; there are the film school graduates who get their first commercial - and get into a huge fight over it that isn't helped by the fact the writer has just blogged about the fact that the one guy is in love with the other guy's girlfriend. And more and more. The acting is very good. The writing is excellent, and somehow, it's avoiding that comic book feel that a lot of short web shows get.

My one complaint is that the interface is a bit difficult to navigate. I hope they'll fix that soon. I'm hooked. It's set to be 36 episodes. That's about 6 hours all together - about the same as a half season of american network TV. Click the title of this post to watch the latest episode, or find them on myspace or youtube. Apparently, myspace will get the first release of each webisode. They're only on ep 6 right now, so it should take around an hour to get caught up.

UPDATE: According to the article that I stole the above pic from , it looks like NBC has bought rights to the show. Once the web run ends, it'll be there!

Gibbonoogle!

Just came across this on Seduced Mind (via theOrg, "now by invite only"). Apparently, Bucky on Get Fuzzy was looking for a place to sell his monkey-oriented good. One of the options he came up with was gibbonoogle.com. Turns out that address is an actual site for a quarterly DVD magazine called wholphin. The reason I'm mentioning this is that wholphin looks pretty cool. Check out the short film called "Drink All Day". Utterly bizarre, but also undeniably charming. I can't wait until I have time to dig a little deeper into the site. I'll let you know if I find anything else, I promise!

UPDATE: I just checked out the registration for the site, and it turns out that they registered the name on September 3rd, the same day that the GetFuzzy cartoon appeared. Savy move, gents. You must be getting loads of hits off of that one! The original link to the site was (and is) wholphindvd.com.

Dylan Messager

Here's a neat little thing that I found on boingboing. It's an advertising piece for the new Dylan box set and greatest hits album (both coming out in October, apparently). You can put you own message on Dylan's infamous cue cards from the 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' video. It's silly, and somehow, I don't think Mr. Zimmerman was actually involved in the decision to do this, but it's fun, so what the hell? Check out the one I assembled by clicking on the title of this post. Then make your own!

A moment of science

As we all likely know by now, Mr. Wizard recently passed away. In order to honor his memory, rebecca from skepchick has proposed the we all engage in a 'moment of science'. Watch the video below (thanks to astropixie, another member of SUGAA for pointing out the video), then make a short science video and post it to youtube as a response. Surely someone out there has some raw footage of interesting projects they've worked on that could be gussied up into a science demo with a bit of voiceover work (say... the effects of gravity on pumpkins, or somesuch). I'm drawing a blank on what to do, but mayhaps I'll come up with something in the next few days and film it over the weekend. I urge you all to do the same!

Check out this funny little youtube video. What a good big brother. He must think his Dad is an uncaring idiot.

Simpson's Clip

I'd never come across this vid before. It's Homer singing along to "It's the End of the World as We Know It", except his lyrics are a bit off. A much needed laugh today. Enjoy!

PS: As best I can tell, Homer is saying:
Le-o-nard whatsisname
Herman munster motorcade
Birthday party Cheetohs
Poker sticks and lemonade
You symbiotic stupid jerk
That’s right, Flanders
I am talking ‘bout you

Scary 'Mary Poppins' Trailer

Another good sttempt at turning a happy movie into a horror movie, or vice versa. This trailer could easily have been for a late 70's horror flick IMHO. Excellent work!
