My Three Favorite Cocktails

Apropos of nothing, I hereby present my three favorite cocktails, in no particular order (stolen off of webtender.com):

1. Caipirinha
We had a brazillian temp in the lab one summer, and he turned us on to cachaca and caipirinhas. Cachaca is made of fermented sugar cane juice (as opposed to rum which is made of fermented molasses), and has a flavor sort of between slijivovica and tequila. So a caipirinha reminds me somewhat of a margarita on the rocks,'cept tastier.
Ingredients:
2 tsp granulated Sugar
1 Lime (8 Wedges)
2 1/2 oz Cachaca

Mixing instructions:
Muddle the sugar into the lime wedges in an old-fashioned glass. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour the cachaca into the glass. Stir well.

2. Aviation
I came across this after a picked up a bottle of maraschino at Discount Liquor, and had no idea what I should mix it with. This did the trick nicely. If you find a bar with a bottle of maraschino behind the counter, order one of these. You'll be happy you did.
Ingredients:
1 1/4 oz gin
1/4 oz maraschino liqueur
Juice of 1 Lemon

Mixing instructions:
Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Juice the lemon and add to the shaker. Pour in gin and maraschino, and shake. Serve straight up in a cocktail glass.
Note that Maraschino liqueur is NOT the juice out of a bottle of cherries. It's a delicious, syrupy, almondy flavored thing - distilled from cherries and flavored with the crushed pits of the same cherries. Makes a delicious drink.

3. Whiskey Sour
Not to be confused with a Whiskey and sour. Every time I've ordered one of these, it's come out different. On the Queen Mary, the made it in a blender, with egg whites. Frequently, I'll just receive a whiskey and sour . And that's tasty enough. But this is better.

Ingredients:
2 oz Blended whiskey
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
1/2
tsp bar sugar
1 Cherry
1/2 slice Lemon

Mixing instructions:
Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

There. Now go out to a decent bar, and get liquored up on those. Maybe instead of turning into the slobbering fool that beer makes you, you'll turn into a witty and urbane tipsy gentleman. Or at least, you'll think you did. And that's close enough for government work.

PS: I hereby challenge all blog-owning readers of The Fishmonger's Place to blog their own favorite cocktails. Post a comment here if you do!

I'm not cool enough to have a blog, but I like to put some ice cubes in a glass and then pour Maker's Mark over that ice. Your whiskey sour recipe looks mighty tastey. I may have to build one soon.

I have a bottle of Cachaca that our Brazilian aupair got me. We might have to get together and make some drinks. And for Heiden I do have some Makers left. Though it took a hit the other night. Better hurry.
