CNN.com - Souter's home an activist target - Jan 21, 2006

I love this story. Saw it in Sunday's Journal this morning (I'm a bit behind in my reading, hmm?). The activists are angry because Souter and other supreme court justices voted to uphold New London, Connecticut's right to seize peoples homes in order to build convention centers, because it would spur economic development. So, they're petitioning a town to seize Souter's home and turn it into a bed and breakfast, because it would be good for the local economy. Hell, I'd go there, and I hate the idea of bed and breakfasts!

It won't work, of course. Souter is a known and respected member of his community, and his home is valuable. I'm sure he's friends with the planners and the council. He'll never get his home torn down, people at his level of power and wealth never do. But the people without connections, the ones with homes that the power people find pathetic, find their homes torn down again and again. For highways, trainlines, power lines - maybe it's justifiable. But for a freaking convention center?! Gimme a break. Maybe we should tear down the homes of everyone who supported these takings and turn the land into parks, low cost daycares and community vegetable gardens. Let the little people benefit at the expense of the power people for once.
