Countdown to cavies!
In a month or two, The Kid will, at long last, have the “furry pet she can hold” which she has been asking for since she was old enough to talk. She’s a damn good kid, and deserves some sort of pet other than a gold fish. We put her off for a couple of years with "Lisa and Katie" the goldfish. Lisa is now about the size of a soviet sub, and still growing daily. Katie, sadly, took ill the day before last year's summer vacation, and was not able to survive.
The “not until you’re in second grade” delaying tactic has officially expired, and we are now in the process of preparing for Guinea Pigs. I spent a month or two reading up on the new learning concerning guinea pigs (and also on how sheeps’ bladders may be empoyed as a navigational device). I’ve been gathering supplies for a couple of weeks now. Final supplies will be acquired this week, with construction of the cage to follow. Then, there’ll be a bit of a wait until TK's new bed arrives, which will then allow us to rearrange the household living space to accommodate the piggies! Then, we’ll just have to find a pair of pigs.
I’d like to get guinea pigs from the Abbott testing labs, or from a GP rescue, rather than from a pet store. Unfortunately, some of the GP rescues seem to think that they are interviewing foster parents for humans, and go a bit overboard. For instance, do they really think I’m going to give them two references?!? Let an animal shelter cross-examine my family and friends about my suitability as a GP owner? I think not. I’ll be happy to help them out by taking their pigs, and will even pay a reasonable price for the critters to help fund their effort. But I’m not giving references and, since I intend to get 2 females, -I’m not paying to have them neutered. Sheesh!
