Since we were driving down to Tennessee, we decided to take in a few sights along the way. Chief among these, as far as I was concerned, was the Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, KY. A bit out of the way (as in middle of nowhere) but, as a Maker's Mark Ambassador, I was especialy excited to visit. Well, the place did not disappoint. In addition to the fabulous tour all visitors received, I also received a special pewter pin, and a certificate thanking me for my service as an ambassador. The grounds are nicely kept up, with little Maker's Mark touches all about (check out the shutters). The tour guide was fabulous, and the tour was actually interesting. I was especially fascinated about the crust that builds up in the large stave barrels. We were told it was due to the whitewashing the barrels receive. It was certainly hard as a rock, so that just might be.
Anyway, it was really a lovely place. And I could've breathed in the delicious aroma of the bottling line forever, but we needed to get back on the road, so that was out of the question. There was time, though, for me to dip my own bottle of Maker's Mark. With two bubbles, and only 4 tendrils, I'm far from pro. But it was a cool experience, nonetheless. I'm jealous! This is one of the best places to visit in Kentucky or anywhere. We've been here twice and enjoyed both times. Too bad you couldn't stay longer; there's some fun geocaches hidden on the grounds. Oh, did you clear out your sinuses by breathing over the mash tanks? Strong stuff.
Actually, the mash tanks were empty for cleaning and repairs. Too sad for me, I guess.
I jealous too. I better have a bit of Maker's to ease the pain. I just received my birth announcement from the Ambassador's club saying my barrel had been filled. These are very exciting times!
