NASA wants a flag!

You can't claim territory unless you've got a flag to plant, or so the old movies would have us believe. Well, apparently NASA wants to start claiming territory, because they've challenged kids to design them a space flag. The contest is open to kids 6 to 12, and the winner gets a trip to NASA's new independent colony on the moon! What? Oh... they don't have the technology to go to the moon any more? Oh. Well, then they get a trip to see the shuttle launched, and some space seeds for their school. Whatever. (When did NASA get so boring?)

I'm reminded of this bit by Eddie Izzard:

"We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. 'I claim India for Britain!' And they're going, 'You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!' 'Do you have a flag? ... No flag, no country! Those are the rules, that...I just made up.'"
-Eddie Izzard "Dress to Kill"

I guess planets are next.
