Around the world, children leave treats out for Santa on Christmas Eve, hoping to persuade the old fellow to, perhaps, overlook a few indiscretions which might have occurred in the past year. But the actual treat left may vary from place to place.
In the United States, children leave out cookies and milk for Santa Claus
In Britain, children leave out mince pies and a glass of sherryfor Father Christmas.
In Norway, a bowl of porridge and perhaps a pint of beer is left out for the julnisse (and for the fjosnissen).
In France, children leave their shoes filled with hay and a carrot for Pere Noel's reindeer, and a glass of wine for the good man, himself.
In Ireland, children leave out a slice of fruit cake and a glass of whiskey for Santa Claus.
