The Fishmongers Word of the Moment: Lakh

Came across this word in a press release from India today. The quote said that India had 2.6 lakh new leprosy cases in 2004 alone. So, what's a lakh? Ask, andWikipedia shall answer:
A lakh (also spelled lac or laksha) is a unit in a traditional number system, still widely used in India and Bangladesh, equal to a hundred thousand. A hundred lakhs make a crore.
So 2.6 lakh is 260 thousand new leprosy cases in 2004. Cripes! And kudos to Novartis who is providing free treatment for the disease through WHO.
